Quite similar to Miséricorde (2024), Radu Jude wrestles with the moral paradox of living in a society full of progressive minds while everything around us seems to be moving backwards. He’s especially interested in how moral dilemmas are judged by distance: when something immoral happens right in front of you, it’s much harder to deflect responsibility onto “the system”, and far more unsettling than when injustices happen elsewhere, either in another part of the world or sometime in the future. In those cases, being “morally right” often gets reduced to gestures like a monthly donation to charity. The film also stares straight at the hypocrisy of progressives enjoying the comforts built on capitalism, colonialism, and all the structures that shape our world today. And it’s often hilarious in a Radu's way, which I always love.
