The film has too many elements while taking time to do an introduction to its ensemble, which means it can feel a bit jarring from time to time. And while the magic moments when music travels through time is charming and mesmerising, the depiction of Chinese music and tradition is lazy, stereotypical and lacking a sincere engagement. But what the film really says is freedom, or what freedom actually means to the twins and their cousins. And what religion means to their music. IMO, it is freedom that connects all the bits and parts together, the Iris, the Black property, the war, and of course the music.
