While Holland’s Franz, a biopic about Kafka, does not deliberately set out to de-mythologise Kafka’s life or his relationship to the world, the film ultimately feels more linear than its form suggests. Despite its non linear storytelling and meta framing, Franz works towards a single way of understanding Kafka. His relationship with his father becomes overwhelmingly central, to the extent that other aspects of his life, such as his relationship with his fiancée or his willingness to join the army, are overshadowed. As a result, Kafka’s beliefs, his relationship with God, and his friendships remain more abstract or mythic, while the father son relationship is positioned as the defining force shaping both his identity and his work.
