Walker-Silverman’s Rebuilding is one of the films that attempts to redefine what the Western can mean. Centred on a so called cowboy trying to find his way after a wildfire has burned down almost everything he owns, the film brings together different textures of Western life. It moves between more traditional images of the West, marked by solitude and the absence of technology, and contemporary American life, where iPad homework and everyday digital routines coexist with rural labour. The question the film raises is what, exactly, is being rebuilt, and what the Western signifies in this forgotten landscape of the American West, in an era increasingly shaped by non human artefacts and speed of development.
