Promising Young Woman is the kind of feminist story that functions primarily as enjoyable entertainment for middle-class white women, much like the director herself. Its politics are rendered in a deliberately straightforward way, with the director carefully explaining every moral position, leaving little room for ambiguity or interpretation. As a result, the film shows little interest in character complexity. Most characters are not developed as fully formed human beings but instead operates largely as vessels for plot necessity and thematic messaging. What remains is a film that is easy to consume and reassuring in its clarity, but ultimately limited in its ability to explore the messier, more uncomfortable dimensions of power, gender, and agency.
