Armed Only with a Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud is the kind of documentary that feels rich with potential. It draws on an extraordinary body of material that could speak powerfully from multiple perspectives: a personal history, a reflection on the risks faced by journalists, or a broader meditation on shifting American and international relations. The sheer scope of the footage suggests the possibility of a complex and resonant film.
However, the documentary ultimately struggles to shape this material into a coherent narrative. Its editing fails to clearly connect the footage with the voice-over, and the film never fully articulates how its many strands relate to one another. As a result, despite the strength of its source material from this great human being, the film lands without a clear direction, leaving its emotional power difficult to grasp.
