Kokuho is yet another tale of the tortured artist. It piles on the drama, but ultimately has little new to say about the role of art or how that role has shifted over time. Despite spanning several decades, the film barely engages with social change in Japanese society. It remains curiously silent on how art is perceived across generations, or how attitudes towards tradition and nationalism have evolved alongside the political landscape.
